Alliance at a glance

SkyTeam offers a two-tiered loyalty program; frequent flyers have the ability to obtain SkyTeam Elite or Elite Plus status, both of which come with their own privileges and benefits. All of the below mentioned benefits work in conjunction with any benefits you may enjoy through your status with your chosen SkyTeam member airline's frequent flyer program.

How to earn & Obtaining status

Starting your journey to Elite Plus status is quick and easy - simply sign up for any member airline’s frequent flyer program and get flying! There is no standalone “SkyTeam” frequent flyer program. Rather, membership with any member airline’s frequent flyer program gives you access to the entire SkyTeam network, and there is no need to sign up for any additional frequent flyer programs other than the one you choose.

Earning status on your SkyTeam airline of choice will subsequently earn you status within SkyTeam itself. In other words, you cannot simply obtain SkyTeam status without obtaining status on your choice airline. So, while you are flying and earning towards your status with your choice airline, you are also actively working towards your SkyTeam status.

For example, Delta's status tier correspondence with SkyTeam looks like this:

SkyTeam Elite Plus= Gold Medallion, Platinum Medallion, Diamond Medallion

SkyTeam Elite = Silver Medallion

Every airline has their own status tiers and elects how those status tiers correspond with SkyTeam status. Head to our Members page to explore further how each member airline sets their own status tiers.

The best part about airline alliances is that you don’t need to fly exclusively on your favorite airline's metal in order to earn miles/points towards your status. Members of any frequent flyer program can earn miles/points for flying with any other member airline, regardless of where in the world they may be traveling.

For example, a Delta Medallion member would be able to earn Delta SkyMiles while flying on a Air France-operated flight from Paris to Rome by simply entering their SkyMiles number when booking their tickets.

Because this flight will earn you SkyMiles, it will count towards your Medallion status, which in turn will count towards your SkyTeam status.

Customers are able to sign up for more than one member airline’s frequent flyer program, but since each of these programs are managed independently, miles and points that are earned with different airlines cannot be transferred to other airlines or combined together in any way. It is recommended choosing one frequent flyer program through which you would like to earn and using it every time you fly, as this will help you obtain your status much faster.

LOUNGES & Lounge Access Policy

The SkyTeam alliance network operates over 750 lounges worldwide, including four SkyTeam-branded lounges in Istanbul (IST), Vancouver (YVR), Dubai (DXB), and Sydney (SYD). SkyTeam Elite Plus status holders are eligible to gain access into the lounges, as well as premium cabin travelers on SkyTeam operated flights. Thankfully, the SkyTeam lounge access policy is very straightforward, and a full breakdown of their policies is outlined below:

Lounge Access via SkyTeam Status

SkyTeam Elite Plus status holders, regardless of their travel class, are eligible to access SkyTeam lounges so long as they are traveling on (or connecting to/from) a same-day international flight* operated by any SkyTeam member airline. Access to the lounges is only available at the airport of departure, and not upon arrival. For customers that would be connecting, both the domestic leg(s) and international leg(s) must be operated by a SkyTeam member airline.

* the term "international flight" excludes any flights between the US and the Caribbean.

Lounge Access via Premium Cabins

All First and Business Class passengers are eligible to access SkyTeam lounges so long as they are traveling on (or connecting to/from) a same-day international flight* operated by a SkyTeam member airline. Access to the lounges is only available at the airport of departure, and not upon arrival. For customers that would be connecting, both the domestic leg(s) and international leg(s) must all be booked in either First or Business Class.

Access to all lounges is restricted to within 24 hours of your scheduled flight departure time.

A note about Guests...

SkyTeam Elite Plus members who are eligible to enter any lounge may invite one guest into the lounge with them so long as that guest is also flying on a SkyTeam member airline operated flight. SkyTeam does not publish any age exemptions for lounge guests.

SkyTeam provides a lounge finder search tool that allows its passengers to search for SkyTeam lounges across the globe by airport code. Simply enter your airport of departure and the tool will pull all SkyTeam lounges that are available at that particular airport. The tool provides location information, opening hours, amenities at the lounge, and more. Bon Voyage!
